English Learners
English Learners accelerate their acquisition of English through the Structured English Immersion (SEI) program — with support for success in every academic area.
How Students Are Identified
A home language survey during enrollment determines whether a student takes the Arizona English Language Learner Assessment (AZELLA), which measures listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Qualifying students take AZELLA annually to monitor progress, and are offered language development support through an approved SEI model from the Arizona Department of Education (A.R.S. §15-756.01).
SEI Pull-Out Model
50 minutes per day of targeted ELD time with an SEI-endorsed teacher, plus at least 50 minutes of integrated language development from content teachers (high school schedule).
SEI Two-Hour Model
100 minutes per day of targeted ELD with an SEI-endorsed teacher — English instruction integrated within content, with differentiated linguistic supports.
SEI Newcomer Model
100 minutes per day of targeted ELD for first-year students identified as Pre-Emergent English learners, plus weekly integrated language development.
Our Goal: Full Proficiency
Students reclassify from ELD services when they score Proficient on AZELLA. Students entering with limited English experience can expect to reclassify within 5–7 years; those with English experience may only need a few years of support. Our goal is full proficiency in Reading, Writing, Listening & Speaking — and mastery of state standards — as quickly as possible.
